why a sound works for output and not for input??

Hi,
I was suprised by the sound card on my laptop, it is great and run correctly for the output and can hear all audio cd's and audio file, but I can't record.

The card is detected correctly same propreties as given by the official installed windXP. ( on windows it works correclty), So I am sure the device is correctly detected.

Is there a special checking to test the card for the recording ???
is there a special module for the recording which different that for reading??

thanks for any help
best regards
bela

Run alsamixer and make sure that the line-in isn't muted. Your distribution might have it muted by default because a lot of users don't have microphones...

Erm... line-in and mic-in are two different things.
They work differently and accept different devices.
Line in accepts low-amplified audio signal, where mic-in accepts passive magnetic or piezo devices that require amplification.

Sorry, I wasn't sure what kind of input the original poster was trying to use (microphone or line-in) and my reply was consequently muddled.

Either way, I'm pretty sure that the last distribution I installed came with all sound inputs (mic-in and line-in) muted by default.
