Find the vertical and horizontal refresh rates for your monitor then as root
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (or xserver-org if using that) choose advanced option put the rates in in the dialog when asked then when you get to the screen resolution dialog use the spacebar to select the resolutions you want the highest will be used by default. If you do this while still in a graphical environment then logout and use
CTRL + ALT + Backspace keys at the same time to kill off and restart the X server. If done at the command line then
/etc/init.d/gdm restart to restart the Gnome Display manager or put kdm in place of gdm if using KDE Display manager.
Edit: If you eventually want to install the nvidia driver Debian has prebuilt modules you can install using apt-get.
