hello,

my pc specification is
- motherboard asrock K7S8X
- graphic card nvidia FX5200 NV34 rev a1
- screen IIYAMA S704HT (Vision Master 404)

I tested the xorg setup with "sudo X -config xorg.conf".
It freezes.
I can come back to prompt with strg/alt/backspace.
When I make "startx", the pc completely freeze.

Can somebody recommend what setup has to be used?
I cannot see curious messages in the log file.

What distro? What driver version?

I'm using a custom built 173.14.30 driver on Debian Squeeze with X 1.7.7 with a custom built 2.6.39.3 kernel. It works just fine.

This is my xorg.conf file. Note that I have enabled overclocking, so the CoolBit is set.

This was already done: NVIDIA dlloader X Driver 173.14.31 (it was compiled/installed on my distro TinyCore 4.4 Kernel 3.0.21).
In fact, now, I deleted that driver, and use the nv driver of Xorg7.5.

Oh, you had Nouveau instaalled. Was it blacklisted by the nVidia installation program? If it was not properly blacklisted, you will experience the same symptoms you described.

In /etc/modprobe.d there should be an nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf or similar files that disables Nouveau. I'm not familiar with TinyCore but if it uses an initramfs, you must update it, reboot for the Nouveau drivers to be completely removed.

I did not blacklisted any nv_xx module because I could not see it was loaded according the Xorg.0.log (only the NVIDIAxx).
At boot, tinycore accept a blacklist=modulexx but I think this is not the way because I could not see any nv module with lsmod at any time before, too.
So, perhaps all nv_xx.ko files should be deleted from initramfs because it make collision with other NVIDIAxx.ko? which ones?
(this is a discussion for information here in the future: my card runs with nv and I have only few time to test again).

I havent dug into TinyCore that much, but if its an option I'd use nouveau over the nv driver.

I've got to ask, why on earth would you overclock a FX5200?

To disable noveau, create a .conf file in /etc/modprobe.d with the following contents:

Rebuild your initramfs and reboot. After rebooting, you will drop to text-only mode. You must run the nvidia-installer -K to load the nvidia.ko module.
