Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Which Mobile Phone should I buy?

Hi

I need to buy a new phone.
I use Ubuntu Linux 5.10 and I would like to do the following:
- Copy files to/from my phone.
- Use my phone for its 3G connection
- Use my phone as a IMAP mail client, with Folder support.
- Synchronise my appoints from Evolution (or Sunbird?)

Which phone should I buy?

My experiences so far have been poor. My last one was a Samsung Z130 which could only do the 3G connection, and I couldn't do anything else with it. Previously I had a Nokia 7110i (or something like that), and that phone couldn't speak to my linux at all. My friend has a Sony/Ericcson Z800i which he's able to copy files (looks like USB stick on Ubuntu), and use it for 3G from the laptop, but cannot synchronise appointments, and the mail clients is poor.

I'd like to go with the manufacturer that is serious about open standards.

Edward

If you get a phone that runs SymbianOS you should be fine. There is p3nfs so you can mount the phone as an NFS share, if it has Bluetooth (which you should get also) then you can sync contacts with Evolution and probably some KDE app as well. Again, 3G should work fine over a Bluetooth link and as to the mail client, do you just mean check your email on your phone? Most phones have been able to do that for a while now, mine is getting on to a year old and I do all of the above except the 3G stuff cause I didn't want a 3G phone, I'm a GSM fan cause I know it works
