Which dvd writer to choose
 

Hello linux friends,

I'm in the middle of orientating on buying an internal dvd writer, but i cann't find out what's the right choice. I'm using Redhat 9.0 and got a reasonable fast machine.
Does anybody know if the LiteOn LDW-811S is a good choice? Does anybody knows if it works right on RedHat 9.0?

Lite.. on?.. Never even heard of that brand. Perhaps you better stick with something a lot of people use. Like Sony. Memorex.. big brands.

Lite-on is a huge manufacturer of optical drives. In fact, many "name brand" drives are or used to be repackaged Lite-on. I have a Lite-on dvd burner and it works perfect for me under Mandrake 9.2 at least. If you are looking for peak performance, go with Plextor, but if you just want a good, solid drive that isn't too expensive, go with lite-on. I co-own a computer sales/repair shop, and we almost exclusively use lite-on, and the times we haven't, we've ended up regretting it. Also, stay the hell away from LG, Cyberdrive, and Artec. They are fine when they work, but they all seem to have some quality control issues. If you're in the US, check out www.newegg.com, they've got Lite-on dvd+rw drives for right around $100. Well, that's about all the advice I have to spout for now!

Do you us K3B with LiteOn LDW-811S. And do you know if the debuged some 411S? And do you need an additional driver for the LDW-811S?
