Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Which Device is SAN Device

Using RHEL 5, how can I determine which devices are being served by my SAN? What makes SAN-served partitions unique in the file system that I can use as a discriminator?

Thanks.

The answer is "it depends". If you just load a basic HBA driver, and plug in a single fiber connection, the device will show up just as another SCSI drive "/dev/sdxxx". Won't look any different than any other drive you have. If you're using mutli-pathing, LVM's, Veritas, etc., it'll be different. Best thing to do would be to contact your SAN support folks/SAN or HBA vendor/RedHat support, and ask them. Too many unknowns to answer here.

That's unfortunate. This seems very unLinux-like since just about all configurations reside in text files. Maybe this will change in the future...but I doubt it as long as commercial products hold on to proprietary formats and protocols as a way of protecting financial interests.

Thanks anyway...
