Or, if you use HID and mousedev, it will most likely show up at /dev/input/mice. Plug in the mouse and type dmesg - the last few lines should indicate the kernel has found a USB mouse and attached a driver for it. If not, make sure hid, mousedev and the driver module for your USB host are loaded. Then simply type cat /dev/input/mice and move the mouse around for a bit - you should see weird characters if the mouse is correctly plugged in. Hit Ctrl+C to quit. You can - of course - cat /dev/usbmouse as well.
