where the audio goes?

Hey, When I play music (say through xmms) where does the audio go? Like, is the audio told to go to /dev/audio and then it plays out the speakers? What if I don't have a sound card installed, then where can I find it (to re-route it)?

It depends on the program you're using. Generally most use ALSA these days to handle all that stuff. XMMS allows you to choose which audio output plugin to use, and you can configure it through their interface. Rhythmbox relies on GStreamer to specify the audio plugin to use.

XMMS has a disk-writer output plugin, if you wanted to save the audio stream to a file.
