Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Post Where are the config files?

I need some info on where Linux keeps its configuration files --a breakdown of the file structure if you could.

I am having an issue getting my drivers for my Asus A7N8X Deluxe board to configure the drivers properly.

Essentially what I am looking for is a guide that helps with a basic install (with programming libraries --I can do this) of RH8 w/o any extra stuff (like beta kernels, or programs etc) other than the drivers for the 3Com nic and nForce drivers and NVIDIA video drivers (although I haven't had problems installing video before on a previous MoBo).

I've read that most people like the ALSA sound drivers. Is this the best option? If it is then I could go with that.

One of the main reasons i'm asking is because somehow I was able to get my 3Com nic to work and don't really know how I did it. One moment it wasn't working and now it does.

EDIT: Are there any special drivers I need in order to get my Plextor 12/10/32A CDRW to work?

Can anyone help a nOOb like me?

I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you!

Voyager

Try "The Linux Documentation Project" @ www.tldp.org, check out any of the HOW-TO's there. Many of them are extremely informative, others are a work-in-progress. There are how-to's for just about everything you asked here.
