what versions of linux are compatible with a sis900 ethernet card?

Well I'm taking another attempt at learning linux and wondered what versions work with my sis900 integrated ethernet card. I've had trouble getting it to work in the past and I would like to use this linux computer as a file server. Well I hope someone can give me some answers before I give up on linux altogether. Iwould like a version thats easy to use similar to windows but not a mirror image I'm trying to get away from that. Preferably it has built in tutorials on how to use that distrobution and get it up and running properly or links to a website that would tell me.

Why don't you try some live cd? Live cd's are great for people who wanna play around with linux without editing their hdd.
Do you know knoppix? Its a great distro. You can also try suse live eval, slax...

All those cd's will let you check your card compatibility and do some linux stuff, but preserving your current hdd layout.

I have a PCI ethernet card that is a sis900: it's branded as an 'Alfa' card. I just installed Mandrake 9.2 and it was detected perfectly. I can't vouch for it working though as I've taken the comp off the network until I can get my ISDN/LAN set up correctly in Mandrake (Mandrake insists on using 'lan' as the Internet connection, grrr...)

I would also recommend trying a Knoppix Live CD, which is available at www.linuxiso.org Knoppix does an outstanding job of hardware detection, and if your card is compatible, I would be confident that Knoppix would detect that. Good luck with the project. -- J.W.
