what test to do on anew harddrive

I've just had a new hardrive delivered - 80 GB Hitachi Deskstar.
I've had alot of problems with dodgy new and used drives in the past and before I put this one into production I was wondering what tests people think you should run on a new drive and with what tools to ensure it's going to be reliable?

Maybe smartctl from smartmontools? It can give estimates, how long hdd should live (based on SMART info stored on hard drive). It makes tests in background. (I used it only once, so I'm not an experienced user)
