What socket type should I get

There seems to be a bunch of new Socket types getting released reacently, and I'm not sure which type to get.

I want a new socket that is going to stick around for a while because I don't plan on buying a top of the line processer and will upgrade it in a few years. I'm going to go cheap maybe midgrade but in a socket that will stick around for a while so I can upgrade w/o needing a new mobo.

I have no loyalty to either AMD or Intel.
I don't pay my powerbill.

There are a lot of variable to that equation. What do you do with the machine? Will you upgrade the cpu in 2 years or in 4 years?

There are a bunch of technologies which MAY be on the brink of massive technologies. IF they come through, in 4 years the cpu sockets will be totally different. An easy example is nanotube capacitors. They have the potential for much, much tighter specifications in a smaller package (ie lower cpu voltages that are stable).

IF nothing changes, then for amd go to AM2, and for intel use whatever the new duo core (the new low heat reworked pIII cpu). If things are changing go with the amd 939 socket and get a deal.

Good Luck
