What NAS devices work under linux ?

Hi,

I am thinking of buying a NAS external hardrive, and was wondering which ones work well with linux ?

I was thinking of the Vantec NexStar LX NAS Enclosure.

Any thoughts ?

that supports smb and ftp so yeah there are two options there... as long as the connectivity methods include an open standard (or smb which is closed but so well reversed engineered it may as well be an open standard) then you should have no problems, there's really very little compatability to worry about as long as it does that. if the box supports nfs then that's even better, and i'd been more encouraged by that, but smb access is fine, and even by the user of the fuse project you can easily mount on ftp and make that look like a normal filesystem too.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

alot of these devices are claiming they are fat32 only. The only one Ive found so far that is ext3 is the Linksys NAS.

I would like to mount the file system as NFS, Anyone know of a unit that can do this ?

ext3 as the internal filesystem is fine if you wish to use it to the full extent of what it can provide, but if it's just personal data, e.g. large media files or whatever you're probably not that fussed about user ownerships and things so i would worry about the internal filesystem.
