what kinds of webcams will work in linux

just tested ubuntu, pclinuxos,and easy peasy, and the web cam worked on the acer netbook does this mean the same for external peripheral web cams

what if the web cam has a built in mic (i was looking at the gigaware cams at radio shack) will the cam work, and if so, will the built in mic work too, although i don't really need the built in mic, i have one that captures sound from anywhere in the room (i boosted it in kmix with the mic boost 20DB button)

will this cam work on my pclinuxos 2009.2 os and does my hardware matter
