What is this NIC chipset + Gentoo q.

My NIC's gone funky by never pinging anything (not even contacting the DHCP server to get an IP) so I'm gonna pop into BestBuy and get a replacement.

They have DLINK NIC's on sale, but does anyone know if they make their own chipset? Or is it like a repackaged digital or realtek chipset? Anyone running a DLINK NIC + Gentoo - if you'd tell me the module name for when I reinstall it I'd be grateful.

Thanks.

install the card in your machine and then cat /proc/pci to see what the chipset is. at least i think that will work.

Dlink, like Linksys, mostly ships other people's chipsets. Offhand I can only think of 3com and SMC who produce and use only their own.

Most likely it is going to be another realtek 8139 board. The module used to be called rtl8139, and changed into 8139too around 2.4.12-ish, which is long before Gentoo even released a beta, so odds are that's going to be the module.

Don't feel the need to be married to D-link either, those el cheapo Linksys tulip cards work wonders as well.

Cheers,

Finegan
