what is a modem router


hi I am going to get broadband.

I have been told to buy a, modem router because,linux does not support any thing eles .

but what is a router. what does it do

Linux works basically with everything that plugs into a ethernet port and is configurable with a browser.

Most DSL only supply you with 2 or 3 IP addresses via DHCP, a modem router can give you up to as many IP addresses as ports you buy ( 8 ports=8 IP addresses) but only using the one from your ISP.
