What is a "environment variable jumper"??

I have a used compaq proliant 3000 server and trying to get it running...
Don't know much about it but I am trying to use smart start to install a distro to it.
Tried live cd SysrescueCD/RIP, others, they all lock up or don't load properly...
Has 512MB RAM and XP professional on it, but password protected-even ntpassword can't seem to load right???
Has ten HD's but no HD in the back.
Does anyone know about this model and how to get it going??
Oh-the smartstart cd is giving the "environment variable jumper" problem...
Thanks
