WG111T with ndiswrapper stops working shortly after boot-up

I have setup my new computer to load up the ndiswrapper module at bootup, bring up the wlan0 interface, and connect to my home network.

At this point, I can browse the internet freely. If I do an `iwlist wlan0 scan` while it's working, it shows me 8 or so networks nearby.

About 30m-1hr after booting up, however, the internet stops working, and all scans come up with "No scan results." Attemps to talk to my home router with dhcpcd time out.

I'm thinking this is probably a problem with my wireless device itself, but I wanted to see what anyone else thought about this.

The driver download from the manufacturer's website comes with several .inf files, so perhaps another driver would cause this problem to cease?

Hi,

Which M$ driver are you using or have tried?

I am using the netwg11t.inf driver located in the "ndis5" folder of the WG111T_re1.2_rc1 version download from the netgear website.

Within the ndis5 folder, there is also athfmwdl.inf, and in the upper level directory there are two other, possibly different versions, of both netwg11t.inf and athfmwdl.inf.

Hi,

You should be using either the 'WinXP' or 'Win2K' versions of the driver.

If the device your using is a Atheros chipset then try the 'athfmwdl.inf.' if that is for either XP or 2K.

Thanks for your reply. I am using the Win2k/XP version of the driver.

How would I find out if my wireless device has an Atheros chipset? I know it is made by Netgear, and the model number, but that's about all. It is a USB dongle.

Hi,

From the cli as root you can do a 'lspci -vv' to show devices. Or use the 'lsusb' if the device is recognized. Since you are using ndiswrapper then you can do a 'ndiswrapper -l'.

lsusb gives me

and ndiswrapper -l gives me

To the best of my knowledge, I do not believe it is an atheros chipset.

Hi,

I still think this is a Atheros chip set for the 'WG111T' because the 'ID 1385:4250'. So try the 'Netgear Driver' which is the xp driver.

I downloaded the driver you linked to, removed the old driver from ndiswrapper and installed this one, rebooted, and I am still having the same problem where it is working at first, and then stops randomly shortly afterwards.

Any more ideas?

Hi,

Check your channels. You could have something that interferes with your connection. What about your lease? Try using a static IP for the device.

Hi,

i have the very same problem but i doubt that interference is the reason because it works pretty reliable with WindowsXP.

I tried both windows-drivers from netgear (v1.2 and v2.2) with the same result. But i noticed, that after the problem appeared the ndiswrapper-module refuses to be unloaded. The command 'rmmod ndiswrapper' just hangs the terminal and never finishes. Also unplugging the device does not help so the only option is a reboot.

As the disconnect appears to happen faster with more traffic, i too think this really may be some problem with the device. Perhaps it stops responding and thus some part of ndiswrapper gets stuck.

It seems that this is a common problem with this device, see also:

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

Do you have the same hardware? Which of the two drivers M$XP or M$2K are you using for 'ndiswrapper'?
