Using Ubuntu 10.04, Mint 9, Fedora 13, Slackware, Epidemic, or noys, even CentOS, does anyone here recommend or dislike any particular brands and models of webcam for use on a desktop, dual core, such as with Skype?

Any Logitech UVC camera. See this list. I have a Logitech C250 myself and it works just fine with Skype.
