webcam not working on Ubuntu8.10, Dell XPS M1330

Hi, I'm running out of ideas here, on how to get my webcam to work. Here's my information:

Dell XPS M1330 Laptop
integrated webcam (internally, I believe it uses a USB port)

Kernel: (ubuntu 8.10) 2.6.27-7-generic

Here is the output of "dmesg" that looked relevant:
[43135.222524] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device Laptop Integrated Webcam (05a9:2640)
[43135.222963] uvcvideo: Failed to query (135) UVC control 1 (unit 0) : -32 (exp. 26).
[43135.280543] input: Laptop Integrated Webcam as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb7/7-6/7-6:1.0/input/input13

Here is the output of "lsmod|grep vid":
uvcvideo 62728 1
compat_ioctl32 9344 1 uvcvideo
videodev 41344 2 uvcvideo
v4l1_compat 22404 2 uvcvideo,videodev
video 25104 0
output 11008 1 video
usbcore 148848 6 uvcvideo,btusb,usbhid,ehci_hcd,uhci_hcd

I also tried: lsusb, lshw, and lspci, but none of these listed anything that looked like it was related to the webcam.

My own google'ing on this problem indicates that it should work automatically, through the "Linux UVC driver & tools", which should already be included with this kernel. But I don't know how to confirm that manually.

When I try to use the "camorama" webcam application, I get the error:
"Could not connect to video device /dev/video0"

I have also tried several other live CD distros, just to see if any of them would work out of the gate (Fedora,Mandriva,Mint,..), but no luck.

Anyone have any other ideas about what to try?
Thanks,
Robert

Hello
But does "/dev/video0" show up after loading the uvc-module (modprobe uvcvideo)?
I am using that module with a Logitech webcam and I use "luvcview" (http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/) to get the video - have to start it up twice as the first time usually cannot connect to the webcam.

Alternatives to luvcview are e.g.:
mplayer -fps 15 tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0
mencoder tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0 -nosound -ovc lavc -o filename.avi
ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -s 320x240 -i /dev/video0 -f mp4 Filename.mp4

Greetings

Pearlseattle,

Yes, the first two applications that you list did work (luvcview and mplayer).

The others didn't work, nor does Camorama.

Strange, but at least I have a way to use it. Thanks for your help!
