Webcam and mic

Hi,

I am on Opensuse 11 running on a gnome platform. Can someone recommend a webcam with mic on usb that I can find a driver that is compatible. Mainly I will be using it for skype.

Thank you in advance.

This is an easy pick (for me at least). I personally love the Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX, bought 3 of them for use on Mepis, Debian, Ubuntu, and Windows (the parents). Never tried it on the Suse's though.

There was no setup for me, just plug it in and go. I use it with Skype as well.

The Logitech QuickCam Communicate STX uses the GSPCA drivers which are included out of the box on newer (2.6.27-onwards) kernels.

If you have an older kernel, you can compile the driver yourself from it's maintainer personal page http://mxhaard.free.fr

This worked perfectly with kernel 2.6.23 on my former Fedora7 workstation, skype and all.

(Now that I have upgraded to 2.6.27-based Slackware 12.2, the GSPCA driver is included in the kernel and Skype crashes when opening the video channel. Webcam works with the likes of MPlayer but no skypage for me anymore from this computer. Aaaarrgh!)

So, this is a good webcam to buy IF you run an older kernel.

People could also come up with UVC-based webcams... I don't know any but they were the first supported.

My Fedora 10 laptop sports an integrated Syntek webcam that uses the compiled stk11xx driver - It works, and this lappie isn't up for any upgrade, I can tell you, be it kernel, OS, skype, driver whatever!

Cheers - anyone with real-life experience on UVC brand/model advice welcome!

Hi,

Your post came just in time!

I bought Creative Livecam Optia AF after reading many reviews at a cost of 35. I had to download and Install the UVC driver from the Suse website. One click installation works from the following website. http://en.opensuse.org/HCL/Web_Cameras

Skype works ok. picture quality is brilliant! The sound sometimes gets very low. I am not sure if this is down to the low bandwidth we have in the rural area. Also like the skype in windows cannot see both myself and the person I am talking to at the same time. I am hoping someone will update the skype version soon.

Cheers!
