Wacom Tablets on Mandrake 9
 

My wacom graphire works great on Mandrake 8.x and on Debian....but Mandrake 9 refuses to recognize it.
what can i do?

I've just asked the same question, I cannot get my Wacom Graphire to track like a tablet, it tracks like a mouse.

I've posted the same question to a number of lists and boards with no reply. I figure it's either a no-brainer or it's not possible. Wouldn't it be grand if someone would reply one way or the other? :-)

If you got help on this, I would appreciate hearing back from you very much!

Forgot to mention that I am using Debian.

I've spent countless hours in Google chasing down tutorials and HOWTO's.

The most frequently quoted HOWTO is from the Linux Document Project -- Wacom Graphire USB Mini-HOWTO by Arnaud Claden dated 01 June 2000. It did not work and caused me a lot of trouble. This is the Howto most frequently refered to (your Google search comes up with 6 references to this specific document).

I found the same thing with the HOWTO from the Linux Wacom Project, I spent 4 hours today on it and didn't get it to work, it's written for Mandrake. [Written for Red Hat, I stand corrected :-)]

The first search item that comes up on your Google search is Last modified: Mon Mar 4 18:53:05 PST 2002 and it also is not addressing my problem. I tried it last week and managed to get the xserver to not respond at all. I learned how to restore my configuration file with this little gem.

Wacom's web site references the Linux Wacom Project, a very worthwhile endevour. Other than that, Wacom would be most happy to sell their latest tablet to you, that's all the information that you will find there. And by the way, it was the first place that I went to for information.

If you cannot offer something constructive to give to assist with sincerely requested help, it would be better if you offered nothing at all. And yes, some of us take offense at being assumed lazy and uneducated.

It's not written for mandrake, it's written for rh8.0. The main devepoper has been extremely busy this past few monthes, and has not been able to update, or even give anyone else (specifically a wacom developer himself) the permission to do so.

The howto should work for any distro, but debian is tad different. There is the help in the email lists, they've been extrmely helpful.

BTW- the howto has some extra info about mandrake inside of it. And my isp is doing strange stuff, and sf.net won’t open.

I should've mentioned that the latest version isn’t at the main page, like I said, the main dev doesn’t have time to update. SF.net itse;f seems to be down, so grabbing 0.5.3 won’t be happening.

The howto should work even for the latest version. But if you’re using 2.6, and trying the howto with >0.5.2 of the drivers, it won’t.

There shouldn’t be anything debian specific as to getting it working, but I can’t review the discuss mailing lists because my isp seems funny about sf.net right now.

Try reviewing any emails in the lists about debian, and if you still are having problems try posting to it.

No debian specific problem, and not debian specific setup.

As for the first poster, the howto should work just fine, if you are having problems, try posting to linuxwacom-discuss mailing list.

I hope any problems can be ironed out there, as I little experiance outside of rh based distros, and not enough info to make a solid guess as to what your problem is.

If you don't have a mouse like device to control the cursor with right now, you can have both a mouse and tablet at the same time. Just make sure the mouse is ps/2 or serial, and that in xf86config your mouse is set to "CorePointer" in serverlayout, and any tablet info is set to "SendCoreEvents", though if you can't even install the tablet don't put any tablet specific stuff in your xf86config file.

Thank you for the thoughtful replies. The HowTo on the Linux Wacom Project pages was very helpful and walked step-by-step through the process. Even though it is written for Red Hat, I have been able for the most part to translate into Debian. The problem I had is that the command ./configure didn't work. I get an error that says "checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables." So much for creating a new wacom driver . . . . . I may get back into this later, I have been thinking about upgrading the Linux kernel from 2.4.18-bf2.4 to the latest kernel 2.4.23, maybe that will straighten this out too.

I do have a mouse that works just fine, and there is a wacom driver/module in XFree86 but I can't get it to load. All of the HowTos I've tried have ended up in X-Windows-System not starting and the whole thing restored to the state prior to working on it.

It's a tad frustrating, I am a graphic designer and artist that also spends time as a geek. I need to get back to work as an artist and designer, preferably with my beloved tablet working, this is the last piece of the puzzle . . . . . and everyone just says "Google it!" Argh! The lists have yielded nothing but silence, at least the local lists that I've joined. I'm going to give the ones that you've suggested a try. I'm also going to spend a little time figuring out IRC, I haven't been on IRC for 10 years.

Though I'm not a programmer, if there are updates to your gcc install. I'm not sure how debian's apt-get works, but there should be an update command.

Try asking in #debian first, then #linux. Both are very helpful.

Linux can be very frustrating.
