Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Wacom module install

I recently installed slackware 12.1 and am trying to set up my wacom tablet. In the past when installing the wacom tablet, I rebuilt the whole kernel. However, I'm curious if there is another way. If I insmod wacom.ko from the directory it is built in, without actually installing the driver, it detects the tablet and xxd /dev/input/event5 shows tablet movement.

However, I believe this kernel was built without tablet support. So if I modprobe wacom there is nothing there in the first place.

I'm wondering if I need to build my own kernel with wacom support or if there's somewhere I can place the wacom.ko file where modprobe will see it?

I don't know if my question was clear, but basically:

Do I need to build the kernel module for wacom into the kernel and replace it with a newer version?

or

Can I just place the newer version in some directory where modprobe will see it and use it?
