Hi,

I'm having some problems to configure my Viewsonic VA1703wb as a dual monitor for my laptop.

I'm doing so with xrandr command, and trying to achieve a 1440x900 in both monitors.

I run:
xrandr --ouput VGA --mode 1440x900 --left-of LVDS

The result: the Viewsonic display a "1440x900" resolution using the same physical space that my laptop does (14.1 widescreen against 17 wide). Thus, leaving gaps of black screen without image. I tried to adjust the monitor image with the monitor control without success.

I have a kubuntu Gutsy, and I don't have 915resolution installed since I have the xserver-xorg-video-intel package.

Any ideas??

Another bit of information. When I choose another resolution (1280x960) the monitor uses all it physical space. But since it's not it's natural resolution I want to use 1440x900.

what is your graphic card? What video driver do you use?

It's "Intel 945" with intel driver.

Hmm... I had problems with intel 945 and i810 drivers (debian etch). After upgrade to intel (+ newer xorg + newer kernel) everything works fine. Does Xorg.0.log provide any clue? In my case I could see the communication problems b/w X and my monitor.

I've been looking the logs. Still no answer to my problem.
What I did found is that the intel driver recognizes the image size as:

And the monitor specs says:

I have the last xorg-i810 driver, but I think is a donwgrade what I need, a friend of mine used to have the dual monitor working OK, but now is as broken as mine. And all that has changed is the x11 driver :S (we'll see)

frenz..m a beginner in linux.... i hav a Viewsonic VA1703wb monitor for ma desktop... 1440x900 resolution doesnt cover whole screen instead leaving spaces in mint linux... except for fedora i faced this problem in every other linux version i used.... this is a part of ma xorg.conf
