Video card problems .... RedHat.9 - - Dell Dimension 1100

This is my first Linux installation.
Display is rubbish (fixed low resolution, crap colors etc)
The Video Card is not probed correctly or there is something
wrong with the Bios. Shipped from Dell in December 2005. Any clues .. ? I have seen people are having issues with other Dell machines too. My monitor is also a bit uncommon (SUN0567, which shows problems with FEDORA).
Thank you in advance
Ibex

Or your using a old out of date OS on new hardware.

Nothing wrong with the BIOS.

The video card (82865G Intel Graphics Controler???) does not have proper support with this old and out of date OS.

I checked and saw that both RHL9 and Fedora Core 1 have problems with your monitor. Both are end of life, out of date and not supported any longer expecpt by Fedora Legacy.

Suggestion: get a modern supported Linux OS if staying with the Red Hat family the use soething like Fedora Core 4 or CentOS-4.3, both are free to download and use. CentOS-4.3 is based on Red Hat Enterprise 4 update 3 and will be supported until;

Thank you for your advice )

To go one more step backwards I spent the whole night
unistalling RHL9, downloading and installing SuSE 9.1 Pers.
which seemed to have v e r y good reviews.

I also downloaded
a driver from Intel which was supposed to fix the problem.
Yet, I am still having the same issues with the RESOLUTION
which is now FIXED to the lowest possible. However, SuSE
recognizes CARD & MONITOR. I bet is something with the
color depths ...

I really desperate and I would not like
to go for another installation again - especially when
nobody in Dell forums has installed successfuly a Linux
OS onto my crap Dimension 1100.

All the best
Ibex

This new question is best answered by posting a new question in the SuSE forum found at this site.

But you may find helpful information here;

No it would not be a good idea to install FC3, but the xorg.conf file information may be useful. It does look like others have install Linux on your laptop (for possible additional helpful information);

Dear Lenard, "Dimension 1100" is actually a poor desktop.
However, things are sorted now. THANK YOU a lot for your
assistance. Best wishes, Ibex.
