video & main bus in old IBM BIOS
Is anyone familiar with the IBM 300GL? Mine has a 333MHz Celeron, running Zenwalk (Slackware) with a 17" Dell P780 Trinitron.
Two questions:
1. At 1024x768 screen resolution, the monitor works okay at 16 bits color depth but not at 24. There's a BIOS entry for video memory listed under ISA Legacy Resources that has 2MB of memory, but it's not adjustable. I found some web pages that say the machine uses Dynamic Video Memory Technology (DVMT), which supposedly allocates memory on the fly, but that doesn't seem to be happening. Is there a way to get the higher color depth working? It's definitely supported by the monitor.
2. I want to swap the cpu with a P3. Will I have to increase the main message bus speed? And if so, is there a way to do that?
Thanks for any ideas. Let me know if you need more specs.
