Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Via82xx and 2.6 kernel problems

I have just recently upgraded to the 2.6.7 kernel from 2.4.25. I had alsa configured on my old kernel, and the via82xx chipset worked just fine. Upon switching to the new kernel, after compiling in alsa support etc. and my via driver, and booting into kde, it locks solid at initializing peripherals. Does this have anything to do with any of the module configuration that I had to do for 2.4? Any thoughts, or help would be appreciated.

Why are you so sure that it's alsa that's causing the problem? In the KDE settings menu for peripherals there's nothing about sound. There are options for infrared, monitor, mouse, keyboard, printer and digicam only. Maybe something else is wrong?

If you have an nvidia video card you need to install the drivers again.
Is your XF86Config-4 file still OK?

Can you get the error message x is giving. If lock solid doesn't mean you have to reboot you can see it, if not then there should be a log file in your /var/log folder.

BTW it would help if you told which distro you're using

I'm pretty sure its alsa, because when I remove the driver from the kernel, no issues. There may be nothing about sound in peripherals, but that is just about where the start up sound for kde starts to play. I don't have a nvidia card, and x86config looks fine. When I say "rock solid" I mean having to reboot the system. I am using Gentoo. Thanks for the reply, if theres anything else for me to try, please let me know.

Can you get your sound to work if you only compile sound in your kernel and not alsa and use the source or packages instead. That was the way it should be installed. How about uninstalling alsa before upgrading and reinstalling again or reconfiguring it in the command line before starting kde

edit: I have the same sound card as you and I did the following: kernel compile sound and VIA82xxx built-in, download ALSA, use ALSA mixer, set ALSA as driver in the KDE control center, fixed permissions for non-root users.
