Do I understand correctly that you compiled the alsa driver into the kernel, and not as a module? Because compiling it into the kernel would be a Bad Thing. Anyway, did you follow the instructions in the Gentoo ALSA Guide?

alsa oss and via modules are built-in in kernel

the alsa guide @gentoo doesn't help

emerged new alsa-driver, utils, etc
still no-sound

lsmod
empty

omerta linux # cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [V8235 ]: VIA8233 - VIA 8235
VIA 8235 with CMI9761 at 0xe000, irq 19

omerta ~ # /etc/init.d/alsasound start
* Loading ALSA modules ...
* Loading: snd-card-0 ...
FATAL: Module snd_via82xx not found. [ !! ]
* Loading: snd-card-1 ...
FATAL: Module snd_mpu401 not found. [ ok ]
* Restoring Mixer Levels ...
* No mixer config in /etc/asound.state, you have to unmute your card!

Did you emerge ALSA drivers too??? The Gentoo ALSA guide clearly warns that this is big mistake! Read the ALSA guide again. Make sure you have only <M> next to everything related to ALSA and your soundcard when you configure the kernel with menuconfig. This is really all in the guide, which I think you really need to carefully read again.
