very strange nvidia behavior

hello

im having a very strange problem with my newly purchased geforce 7300 (distribution ubuntu feisty 64 bits)

1) i installed the driver
2) restarted the computer - xserver doesnt start anymore "failed to start the x server (you graphical interface) blabla"
3) i restarted the machine in recovery mode and ended up in text mode
4) i entered: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and in the tool selected the "vesa" driver
5) i restarted the machine and it booted into X (with the vesa driver)
6) i restarted the machine again booting into recovery mode
7) i entered: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this time selected the "nvidia" driver
8) i typed "exit" and the xserver started (with the nvidia driver, as it should be!)
9) goto 2)

can anyone understand this strange behavior? at least i know the driver works but the configuration gets screwed up every time i reboot the computer!

thanks

martin

Maybe first check if the nvidia driver is properly loaded to your kernel. Yo can do it using lsmod. There should be nvidia module listed. If it is loaded
then check
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log
for errors.
