Very strange hardware quirk?

Ok this was a very strange one.

I posted this in Hardware because I am almost positive it had nothing to do with the software and MAYBE nothing to do with Linux.

I have been running Gentoo Linux on this machine for quite some time now and its still just as blazing fast as when I installed it.

This is a laptop with an "Intel passed" overclocked CPU.

I am using it as a desktop of sorts plugged into an exterior monitor with an exterior keyboard and mouse. I have my reasons.

Of course I have the laptop propped up on the sides to ensure maximum air flow into its three fans on the bottom.

I have this laptop hooked right into the wall. No battery.

This laptop is left on for days at a time. Not usually a problem with the hardware nor Linux.

After I got back from my cousins graduation ceremony I got on my laptop as usual and went back to game programming in C++.

It didn't take long for me to realize that the computer was running abnormally slow. It wasn't unbearable at first so I just ignored it.

Then it just got slower and slower until it took several seconds to move the mouse cursor. O.o

All the while the CPU was at 100%.

I shutdown the computer with Linux and it went through the normal shutdown procedure.

What was really strange is the monitor turned off but the laptop was still going.

Nothing was going on but the CPU fans were spinning as fast as they could.

I held the power button on the laptop to stop it but nothing happened.

I had to pull the power plug right from the laptop to kill it. O.O

After waiting a couple minutes I started it back up and its just as blazing fast as when I got it...

Very strange indeed.

Anyone else experienced anything quite like this?

Could this be a preemptive hardware failure?

Have you checked what process(es) is/are taking up all that CPU time? Try opening a terminal and running "top" to see what's taking up 100% CPU. There's likely something running in the background that shouldn't be.

Well I am going to call it a fluke (for now) because at of this very moment its running smoothly.

Also why is Linux using swap when there is PLENTY of RAM to use? Doesn't make any sense to me.

Here is the output of "top"

Could be overheating, that can cause the issues you describe.

BTW, 2616k of swap use, sometimes thats the way swap works. You could possibly get rid of it by playing with sappiness, but I wouldnt bother.

Hi,

If this happens again then I would check the logs in '/var/log/'. Your just shooting in the dark with 'top'. If it is overheating then something should show up.

Book-ending the laptop is not the way to insure proper operation since the unit is designed to operate horizontally or slight angle off. You could use a laptop cooler to extend the life.
