Exclamation Very slow USB transfer speeds - Ubuntu only

Help! I'm at the end of my rope here. And the most frustrating part is, I've found many posts all over the web from others who have had similar problems, but they ALL seem to be older distros and those solutions don't work for me. "Find Similar Threads" only yields one thread, and I don't have the file mentioned in the answer (the original poster didn't either).
EDIT: Found it. But the proposed solution was to make sure that CONFIG_USB_EHCI_TT_NEWSCHED=y was set. Mine is.

Computer: AMD 64 Quad core, USB 2.0 on front bus, dual booting Vista and Ubuntu 10.10
Device: New Sansa Clip+ 8GB mp3 player

Problem: When I transfer files to my mp3 player in Ubuntu, I max out at about 150 KiBbps. It's painfully slow - it takes me half an hour to transfer 300 MB worth of albums. I had similar problems with an older player that may have been usb 1.1, but this one is brand new. And when I switched to Vista (first time in months, thankfully), I was able to transfer the same files at upwards of 3 MBps. I know that flash devices often can't write anywhere near the max speed of USB 2.0, but obviously it can do a whole lot better then 150 KiBps!

So, same hardware, same files, different OS - the problem must be with my Ubuntu config.

One more thing - I was poking through the lsusb output, and found this:
Quote:
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Device Descriptor:
bLength 18
bDescriptorType 1
bcdUSB 2.00
bDeviceClass 9 Hub
bDeviceSubClass 0 Unused
bDeviceProtocol 0 Full speed (or root) hub
(underlines mine) Does this mean it's running at full-speed (USB 1) speed? Instead of high-speed? Or is it just because it's the root hub?

It's reading, apparently, as usb-1.0, which had a max speed of 1Mb. Get a decent quick, short cable in there. It sounds like things are slowing because of errors. Usb-2.x cables are thicker, and get any 10:1 hubs out of the way.

It actually comes with a very short (about 6 inches) cable, and while I can't tell if it's USB 1.1 or 2.0, I'd be amazed if it were anything but 2.0.

And again, using the same cable plugged into the same port, I got over 3MPbs in Windoze

you do have ehci_hcd loaded?

lsmod |grep ehci

Try to load it manually with
Code:
sudo modprobe ehci_hcd
Then plug in your flash drive and copy some files to it.

Yes, I tried that earlier. Trying it again - still no ehci showing up under lsmod though. Is that normal? Transfer speed looks to have stayed the same.
Yesterday I tried blacklisting uhci_hcd (in case it was loading on boot instead of ehci) but nothing seems to have changed.

Grr, this is driving me nuts!

Cutting to the chase: You need ehci_hcd loaded for usb-2.0; You need a usb-2.0 root hub. I think the smart tweak would be (in /etc/modprobe.d/usb.conf)

install uhci_hcd /sbin/modprobe ehci_hcd; /sbin/modprobe uhci_hcd

Which, should load ehci_hcd before uhci_hcd. When I check for dependencies of ehci_hcd, I see none.
dec@genius:~/download/temp$ uname -r
2.6.35.4-agp
dec@genius:~/download/temp$ grep ehci /lib/modules/2.6.35.4-agp/modules.dep
kernel/drivers/usb/host/ehci-hcd.ko:

Check that it's there with ls -l (I got that lesson once from a zero length firmware file)

@business_kid:

Thanks, I'll try that.
Ok, I did that, but after rebooting, the grep still isn't finding any "ehci". The usb.conf I created is there and complete, but nothing seems to have changed

Also, I'm wondering, what did you mean by this line?

I don't know where that directory is?

kernel/drivers/usb/host/ehci-hcd.ko:

The top line is my search of the local modules, and the bottom is the result. So your ehci_hcd module should be in /lib/modules/<your kernel version>/kernel/drivers/usb/host/ehci-hcd.ko

Check that it exists, and is not zero length.

Ack. Ok, it doesn't exist.

Another forum I hang out on has several people who are of the opinion that I'm having a problem with this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+b...2?comments=all

In that case, I'm pretty much boned.
But I'm going to try and figure out why I can't get ehci in the modules first... Thanks.
