USB stick fails to be detected in debian sarge

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi all,

I use debian sarge for an embedded app. So it doesnt have any desktop manager (X). When I plug in a USB stick, it fails to get detected. I dont see anything relevant in my dmesg also. Im attaching my dmesg for your reference - [hdc is my CF card on which debian is installed.

If I remember correctly you can use hotplug is Sarge. A usb stick is seen as a storage device and since you appear to have all the necessary available you should be able to mount it like any storage device;

as root; mount -t vfat /dev/sdd1 /media (or tmp or whatever, also the relevant file system; used vfat in this example)

When etch arrived they moved from hotplug to hal which kind of automates the process.

When you plug it in it should register in /dev/bus/usb/ so try the command lusb and see what comes up.

Thanks TigerOC.
lusb is not found in my box. The response is "-bash: lusb: command not found"
And, regd /dev/bus/usb, that is also not found. I have only /dev/usb/.
when I ls /dev/usb, I have
"cpad0 ez4 hiddev13 lp0 lp5 mouse14 scanner0 scanner5
ez0 ez5 hiddev14 lp1 lp6 mouse15 scanner1 scanner6
ez1 ez6 hiddev15 lp10 lp7 mouse2 scanner10 scanner7
ez10 ez7 hiddev2 lp11 lp8 mouse3 scanner11 scanner8
ez11 ez8 hiddev3 lp12 lp9 mouse4 scanner12 scanner9
ez12 ez9 hiddev4 lp13 mouse0 mouse5 scanner13 usblcd
ez13 hiddev0 hiddev5 lp14 mouse1 mouse6 scanner14
ez14 hiddev1 hiddev6 lp15 mouse10 mouse7 scanner15
ez15 hiddev10 hiddev7 lp2 mouse11 mouse8 scanner2
ez2 hiddev11 hiddev8 lp3 mouse12 mouse9 scanner3
ez3 hiddev12 hiddev9 lp4 mouse13 rio500 scanner4"

I'm stuck. No idea how to proceed.
Since there is no desktop manager like X, should I do some operations manually for the stick to get detected that otherwise would have been handled by X?

Another strange thing I noticed is that my stick is can be found in /proc/bus/usb/devices as

"T: Bus=01 Lev=01 Prnt=01 Port=00 Cnt=01 Dev#= 3 Spd=12 MxCh= 0
D: Ver= 2.00 Cls=00(>ifc ) Sub=00 Prot=00 MxPS=64 #Cfgs= 1
P: Vendor=058f ProdID=6387 Rev= 1.41
S: Manufacturer=JetFlash
S: Product=Mass Storage Device
S: SerialNumber=0QEB2T7S
C:* #Ifs= 1 Cfg#= 1 Atr=80 MxPwr=100mA
I: If#= 0 Alt= 0 #EPs= 2 Cls=08(stor.) Sub=06 Prot=50 Driver=(none)
E: Ad=01(O) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms
E: Ad=82(I) Atr=02(Bulk) MxPS= 64 Ivl=0ms"

Am I missing someting very silly???

after you inserted your usb stick and waited for
a few seconds
what does this

cat /proc/partitions

display?

if the key is detected you should see new entries
aside from your hard drive partitions
(the last column gives you the name of the device and its partitions
.... sdb
.... sdb1
or
.... sdc
.... sdc1
etc.
)
if you don't see any new entry, as root,
check if you have the command 'rescan-scsi-bus':

which rescan-scsi-bus

If you have it, try it:

rescan-scsi-bus

then try again

cat /proc/partitions

You probably don't have the necessary modules installed. There is some interesting info on this here.

The device will be treated as a scsi device so you need install the module scsi_mod (modprobe scsi_mod) and check that you have uhci support (modprobe usb-uhci). The reference above will help you figure this one out.

Thank you all guys...I fugured it out...
It seems for USB mass storage to work, you need the following modules loaded

usb_storage 28260 0
sr_mod 11044 0
sd_mod 10512 0
scsi_mod 71496 3 usb_storage,sr_mod,sd_mod

newbies, heads up!

By the way, the command is "lsusb", not "lusb". On debian it's found in the usbutils package.
