usb speakers have Power but No Sound

Hi

Recently moved from Fedora to Xubuntu 11.04 on my Acer Aspire 5610z laptop. I use usb external speakers while watching movies for the improved sound and headphones to listen to music as the laptops internal speakers are quite poor. Since installing Xubuntu 11.04 although the usb speakers show power is being received and the speakers mute and volume controls do show control via the speaker icon on the desktop but there is No sound. Both headphone and internal speakers remain working which puzzles me.

Can anyone help as I've already looked at many guides to sort sound problems and tried steps suggested to no avail.

Thank you.

At first it sounds to me like xubuntu has the wrong driver loaded but thinks everything is fine. I'd start with #lsub and/or #dmesg | tail (just after plugging the speakers in) to identify the speakers, then check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting "Is the system recognizing your sound card?" and a couple more checks down

And post back here the speakers info you found (also googling <your speaker model+ubuntu> found from #lsusb could help)
