Question USB - Serial RS232 Adapter

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I have recently installed SuSE 9.2 Pro on a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop. The install went perfect and I am very happy with the new OS. However I deal a lot with Cisco kit in the course of my job and this laptop does not come with a Serial port for the console connection to the router / switch. Can anyone recommend a USB to Serial adapter that they are using that installs under Linux? I have not tried any yet and did not want to buy one that may not work.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Good question - I'd like to know the answer myself........

I think...I think, that recognising the USB will be no problem, but you need a module to recognise and control the serial, so you MUST find one that has LINUX drivers. I suspect the chance of this is vanishingly small, as most hardware suppliers support LINUX grudgingly at best, and only where the hardware is reasonably expensive (video cards). Otherwise, you need someone who writes a driver for their own satisfaction. I think the market segment is very small for USB/serial conversion - most people who care would just make sure their laptop came with USB. You and I probably should have done the same

I hope someone more experienced has a better idea.

best wishes

Jim

USB-Serial RS232 adapter

check out the Zonet USB to RS232 Cable, Model "ZUC3100"
it uses the PL-2303 which as I understand it, is supported under linux

I'm running SuSe 9.1 pro. My ThinkPad T42p was sent with a Belkin USB-PDA adapter, which is really just a usb->rs232 adapter. It seems to get recognized just fine and sets up a serial port on /dev/ttyUSB0, on autodetect. It uses a "magic control technology" chip.
