Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

USB->Serial adapter

My laptop doesn't have a serial port, which I need to connect to a server via null modem cable. Which usb->serial adapter should I buy? Will any old generic device work with linux, or should I stick to a specific brand?

I've used several different models of USB/serial, and they've all worked fine. However, I'd keep the receipt, just to make sure yours does...

I've used several as well with no problems.I've used my Linux box to identify others that were unmarked so I could find Windows drivers for them..

This unit from Tripp Lite works and uses the Prolific PL2303 Driver http://www.provantage.com/tripp-lite...r~7TRPA12F.htm

Code:

Most of the pl2303-based adapters should be fine (depending on the age of your kernel).
Easy to find on eBay.
