USB Scanner configuration issues for HP all in one printer

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this. I have recently set up my new HP Deskjet 3050 all in one printer. After managing to get the printing functions to work properly, I'm banging my head against the wall as I cannot manage to get xsane to find the scanner - this seems to be related to usb permissions, as I get the following when trying to find the scanner (I get the same results when trying with su privileges as well).

This is in Mandriva 2010.2.

Code:
  [andy@localhost ~]$ sane-find-scanner

      # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
      # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
      # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

      # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure that
      # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

      # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
      # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

      # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

      # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports
      # can't be detected by this program.

      # You may want to run this program as root to find all devices. Once you
      # found the scanner devices, be sure to adjust access permissions as
      # necessary.
    [andy@localhost ~]$ scanimage -L
libusb couldn't open USB device /dev/bus/usb/001/006: Permission denied.

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).
    [andy@localhost ~]$

Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks!
Andy

I've got a Deskjet 4235 and haven't had any issues with either the printer or scanner; I use Fedora 14/15 and it just worked OOTB

How...

Are you using the HPLIP driver for this all-in one?

So did you look at
ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/006
ls -l /dev/bus/usb/*/*

to see if there actually is a permission bit problem,

And can you mount a memory stick on that usb port and read and write it ?

Is there a group called scanner? I don't know about Mandriva, but in debian there is a scanner group for users of the scanners. Add your user to that group if it is not already a member.

Finally 'fixed' this.

I rolled my machine back to its state before I tried installing the printer (mandriva 2010.2). Then installed the packages:
task-packages-printing
task-packages-scanning

and it all then worked like a dream...
