USB printer not seen by cups

I have been fighting with an hp3820 usb printer for a week now, and I'm having new problems at every turn! Here is a previous post about not being able to print ghostscript.

However, before I could continue working on that problem, now I can't print at all. Cups will not see the usb printer, and will only give me options for parallel and scsi. The first time I ran cups to set this printer up it saw the usb fine.

I get a strange result from dmesg:

bash-2.05a# dmesg | grep printer
printer.c: v0.8:USB Printer Device Class driver
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 0 alt 0
printer.c: usblp0: removed
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 0
printer.c: usblp0: removed
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 4 if 0 alt 0
printer.c: usblp0: removed
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 5 if 0 alt 0
printer.c: usblp0: removed
printer.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 6 if 0 alt 0

Why would my printer be removed like that?
Here is my messages log:

Here is output from lsmod:

The usb modules are there, and the printer is mentioned. So I guess that looks allright.

In kde, I can see the printer listed under the control panel -> info -> usb devices. Gives the exact name and model of my printer.

I've tried stopping and starting cupsd and lpd. Reran modprobe printer.

Sorry if that's too much info to sort through. But if anybody had any ideas, I'd be grateful.
Thanks kindly.
