USB Ports

I'm running Mandriva 2005 LE on a Gateway M275 tablet PC and am having some problems with my USB ports. A friend of mine posted a similar topic and reminded me that I needed to ask about it. I have an optical USB mouse that worked fine when the pc still had windows xp on it, but after installing Linux it doesn't work, it lags horribly and jumps across the screen. Sometimes however it will work just fine, but only for a few minutes before it starts bugging out again. Does anybody know what would cause this?
