USB not enabled using latest Ubuntu

I have installed Ubuntu onto my system and everything appears to be working fine except that I can't get it to recognize any USB devices (I've tried with 3 external drives and a flash drive). I am using the latest Ubuntu distribution (6.10).

Below is the result of lshw showing three USB controllers.

Code:
$ sudo lshw -C bus

When I plug in a USB device I get four messages from /var/log/messages:

Code:
$ tail -f /var/log/messages

Feb 14 17:40:06 monocongo kernel: [17179828.344000] usb 3-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 16
I never see these devices in the File Browser, so I am assuming that they're not being recognized and mounted as filesystems. I have little understanding as to how this works, but I was assuming that I could just plug these in and they would be mounted automatically as separate filesystems visible in the File Browser application.

If anyone can give me a clue as to where else I might look for the trouble, or what I might try to fix this then I'll certainly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
