Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question USB mouse with KDE / Mandrake 9.1

Freshly installed Mandrake 9.1 installation, using KDE with a USB mouse. When using an application (seems to be any application), the mouse will not respond momentarily, then it will respond for half a second, and repeat, until the application has stopped whatever processing it was doing.

How can I resolve this issue? It would be nice to be able to continue to use other applications while, for example, Mozilla is loading.

Thanks for your time!

My bad...forgot to note version of KDE. I'm using KDE 3.1.
