usb mouse on slackware 10.1

I just got a brand spanking new Dell Inspiron 700m. It uses a synaptics touchpad that works fine with gpm and through X.

I have notced that when a optical usb mouse is plugged in before boot, it retains power throughout boot-up but then the light goes off when rc.hotplug is executing.

I cant get this thing to work for the life of me! Any ideas? I know it woudl work with the default 2.4 kernel, but I upgraded to 2.6.11.11.

i didnt have all the neccessary usb stuff compiled in the kernel. A re-compile fixed it up real quick.
