USB mouse not working

I have just tried to give a demo of Mint Cinnamon, Mint Mate and Ubuntu to a friend who's been having problems with Window$. Embarrassingly although all three loaded, none of them recognized the USB mouse.

Does the mouse work on another PC? Or under windows?

This was a demo using a live DVD. The computer normally runs Window$ and everything including the mouse works.

This isn't getting any easier is it! I have to admit I am in the dark as you are. Can you bring up a terminal and type:

Code:

lsub
When I did this I got

Let's confirm that the system actually sees your mouse.

I wrote this in post #3: "The computer normally runs Window$ and everything including the mouse works."

Thanks timl, I now think this may be more than just a mouse problem. It's a Dell Dimension 1100 and I have just read in reviews that the "Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2" is not very good. Perhaps it's not up to running Mint 14 Mate - which is what I thought would be most suitable to convert a Windows user.

The video card is only a problem with Ubuntu 13.04, but it doesn't matter as after some more experimentation I have found that it will run several earlier distributions. However on most of them the USB (not just the mouse, everything USB) won't work.
Mint-14 Cinnamon - USB doesn't work
Xubuntu 10.10 - USB doesn't work
Xubuntu 10.04 - USB OK
What has happened between those two versions of Xubuntu to stop the USB working?

(Timl - I'll try 'lsub' next time I get a chance.)

I've gone for an easy solution and got her a computer with a newer graphics chip - it runs Mint-15 Mate.

I've closed the thread because I think it was a graphic card inadequacy unrelated to USB.
