Hi all! Everyone was so helpful to me in a previous post, that I am hazarding a guess that someone might also be helpful again with my latest problem...
I am new to linux, after finally getting fed up with dealing with windows for so long. So I finally made the plunge just the other day. I was putting it off for so long, but I finally realized that the majority of my computer usage consisted of web surfing, email, programming, and rocket arena 3.
SO, to make the transition as smooth as possible, I grabbed rh9 and jumped full tilt into the fray. My biggest drawback was getting my modem to work. (The notorious Alcatel Speedtouch USB modem). But, lo and blow holes, a quick visit to Ben P.'s website and a short HOW-TO later, I was on the internet.
This is where I am having a problem. Occasionally my dsl line drops, and I have to reconnect. This is not really so much a problem now that I understand better what is going on when I do connect. I can just kill the pppd and the microcode management to get ready to reconnect. But this is where my problem is.
I have to manually unplug my usb modem in order to be able to re-upload the microcode and to reconnect pppd. I was wondering if there is perhaps a command or way for me to "restart" the usb device in question? (I am just too lazy to continually reach down and unplug my modem, then plug it back in). Please bear in mind that I am still really really new to Linux (but very, very enthusiastic, especially with the latest rh9 release so far). It seems that if I can just "restart" the usb device, I would have no problems...
Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks again to everyone on this board who have been incredibly helpful so far!

When I used xDSL on RedHat, mine would disconnect on it's own also. I would recommend shelling out $50 and getting a small 4 port router to fix that problem.
Hello Bigun, im interested in the idea you have but....not being techie, how do i set this up, currently have the alcatel usb speedtouch for adsl, would you mind letting me know how best to set this up so to help me get online through Linux?
