USB modem

I have used Slackware for while now and I have a problem with my usb modem. When I try to connect (using ppp-go or whatever) the computer totaly locks up.
I have installed the drivers for my modem, and I have support for USB in the kernel. Usually I'm not the kind of person who ask before having tryed a lot, but it is frustrating when the computer locks up all the time.

Does anyone have any clues that might leed to something?

Am I the only one who have experienced this problem? Is there any other who has a modem with the smartlink chip? How is it possible that for the computer to lock up when I call the device file, may there be a conflict with another device? If the modules are loaded or not is irrelevant, lock up will be the result in any case.
