USB: Memory Stick: no /dev/sda1

I'm running FC3. I'm having problems with a USB memory stick. When I plug it in, a device appears in the /dev directory (/dev/sda), but no mountable partition appears: /dev/sda1 does not appear. This is not because there is no such partition. If I run fdisk on it and immediately exit, then a /dev/sda1 will appear, and I can mount it, and copy files to, and everything is fine.

What must I do to cause the /dev/sda1 partition to automatically appear whenever I plug in the memory stick (so I can then automount it)?

No idea, but in Mepis it does it automatically. What happens after you mount it and reboot? does it go away again?

The reboot made no difference. The dev/dsa1 still does not automatically appear.

What about making an entry in your /etc/fstab file?

Most likely a problem with hotplug not your fstab... I would look in that direction. Personally I don't like all this automounting junk... I disable it...

I think you are right, i dont have a running hotplug service which was mentioned from other post. i dont even get an /dev/sda1 when tried to run fdisk.

I would be happy at least if it goes automount.
