Have you tried formatting it?

No idea what the exact linux command is to do that (!) - but if you have a Windows machine handy, simply pop it in and format it...? Maybe it'll help.

Also, it could be you have exhausted its read/write cycles.

I did already try to format it from a windows XP. But the device is not mount either on windows, no drive letter appear.

I tryed some other stuff:

I can definitely see the volume on linux, but no partition.
Code:
# sfdisk -l /dev/sde

Disk /dev/sde: 977 cylinders, 64 heads, 32 sectors/track
read: Input/output error

sfdisk: read error on /dev/sde - cannot read sector 0
 /dev/sde: unrecognized partition table type
No partitions found
I tryed a file system check, without luck...
Code:
# fsck -pv /dev/sde
fsck 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
fsck.ext2: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sde
Could this be a zero-length partition?
...another one for FAT, since i think it was a fat32 partition
Code:
# fsck.vfat -a /dev/sde
dosfsck 2.11, 12 Mar 2005, FAT32, LFN
Read 512 bytes at 0:Input/output error
...and a dump to file, but no luck.
Code:
# dd if=/dev/sde of=/tmp/r1 bs=512
dd: reading `/dev/sde': Input/output error
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes (0 B) copied, 2,89426 s, 0,0 kB/s
Any help ?

Yikes! You already tried all the stuff I think you possibly can.

It has probably just expired its design read / write cycle count.

Have you tried it on another PC or laptop? In different USB ports?

Anyway, you may need to buy a new one... you DO have backups of the data on it, don't you??

Yes, i tried on 2 others laptops(1 Windows XP SP2, 1 with Ubuntu) and another desktop with Windows 2000.
none of them was able to mount it.
Believe me or not, i purchased it 3 years ago, since this time i couldn't use it. i did put it on a cabinet, and just discover it a week ago.
So sure there is no data on it.
I guess i just have to replace it by 16Gb paying the same as i purchased this 1gb 3 year ago.
Thanks anyway for the answer.
If anybody have another idea, i'll take it !
