No, before the grub menu, hit the key that gets you into the BIOS setup program.
Just after powering up, there should be a message on a key to hit to enter bios. Another one to hit to select a different boot device.
Besides that; look at what kernel modules are loaded.

There should be one called usb_core or usbcore; and another called usb_hid. If not try:

You may also need ohci_hcd, ehci_hcd or uhci_hcd.
Also try restarting the HAL daemon and the dbusd daemon.
