usb keyboard/mouse in linux

how does one install linux with a usb mouse and keyboard? Whenever i try to, I have to enable legacy emulation, and that only works until linux tries to turn on usb, then the keyboard and mouse die....... is there any good distro that supports installing with a usb keyboard and mouse?
