USB Harddrive causes Linux to freeze up

I'm having a problem with my Western Digital External USB Harddrive. What happs is when accesing mainly the pictures on the drive (Attempting to build a thumbnail library will cause this 100% of the time) will cause the system to lock up. I've waited upwards of 30 minutes and it never recovers from this. Using [ALT+SYSRQ+B] will however reboot the system. I really want to migrate all the way to Linux but that's simply not possible until I can get this problem solved...

Never mind, I'm pretty damn sure I got it. I had to mount it manually as a vfat HDD. I loaded over 1000 thumbs and it didn't freeze so I think it's fixed.
