USB drive using a Serial-to-USB adapter?

I have a pre-USB laptop, and was hoping to use a USB pen drive with it. The laptop has a serial port, so I was wondering if it was possible to use a serial-to-usb adapter for the pen drive. Anyone know if this will work? Or other information about getting it going? Thanks.

FYI: yes, it has a PCMCIA slot, so I could get a USB PCMCIA card, but the slot is already full w/ my network card

I've never seen a serial to USB adapter. Just a USB to serial adapter which does not work in reverse. There is a network USB server device but it isn't supported in linux. I can't of any way to kludge something together.
